Info

Delinius Rupert Langton is a Soul Flame, commonly known among the Gridmask population of Ludus for his actions during and after the witch hunts. He was born on Ludus in -202 ADC/AEQ as a Gridmask. His pestertag is disillusionedLongevity.

Personality

Delinius has a feeling for tact and often takes notice of subtle signs and details that allow him to understand others better. Normally, he is distant to those he doesn't know, but lets this attitude go if this when he becomes more familiar with them. He's quite kind towards friends and colleagues, though not necessarily very open about his thoughts or any plans. Especially his past is a slightly sensitive subject for him, and he keeps it to himself as much as possible.

Aside from this, he has several characteristics that he tends to be proud of. As a Dwinian, he is proficient in several common and uncommon languages of Ludus, as well as a few not native to the planet. Due to this, his speech is full of quirks and odd words, leading to many jokes and humourous misunderstandings, often caused by him on purpose. As well, he is known for his distinct accent and the related dialect of Ludusian Common he speaks, which differs in its many alternate spellings as well as words not used in the Gredilean form. Another major difference involves his cooking, which features spices and herbs not found on Gredile. How exactly Delinius acquires these despite their absence is not known. It is plausible that he cultivates these himself, but this has never been proven.

A magical accident caused Delinius to develop into a Soul Flame, also drawing in fragments of the souls of several deceased individuals near him. This results in occasional erratic behaviour that is mostly surpressed save for moments of extreme strain/danger.

Appearance

Delinius' hair is originally dark brown, though it later turned to a more reddish brown colour due to a magic-related accident. It remains fairly tidy despite the fact he does very little about it and tends to hang just above or across his shoulders and springs up towards the back a bit as well.

His usual clothing consists of an orange vest of a colour identical (or similar) to his auric colour, with red pads on the shoulders. He also wears a short mantle in a similar colour for particular occasions. Under this, he wears yellowish-brown pants, red socks and a pair of brown shoes. In some cases, however, he wears a dark blue coat, along with a brown hat, an old disguise associated with Leonard Essington, a pseudonym.

Story

Α Alpha Timeline

Delinius' role remains a background one on this timeline due to established agreements. He is considered a valuable employee of LDZX who deals with various '(il)legalities'.

Saga-Unsplit Timeline

Early life

Delinius grew up in an extended family, consisting of aunts and uncles with their families, as well as several grandparents, living in the mountainous area in the west of Faeric. Like the rest of his family, Delinius belongs to a line of Gridmasks descending from a lesser god, Dwin, whose followers (and any descendants) possess skill in pyromancy and in general high magical ability. Circumstances around his birth were not notably strange, although the rain passing over had cleared shortly after his birth. Some interpreted this as a good sign, though most would come to pass it off as coincidence rather than active influence.

Upbringing

With visible talent for both regular and magical teachings, Delinius quickly learned various subjects (with a notable preference for any more closely related to culture) through his parents. His grandmother, Agatha, took care of the various magic arts that befitted any proper Dwinian, especially one of his family line. This included pyromancy, photomancy, a number of other elemental arts, and the obscure art of phlogistomancy. While many of these talents were only moderately developed, his grandmother assured him that it would be everything would need "for all of life". Especially Delinius' father Caldeus considered this vague description a sign that the elderly Agatha was slowly losing her sense, which she clearly refused to accept, pointing out that she still had the wits to teach her only grandson the various arts at her disposal.

Nazcan Invasion

The events later recorded as the Nazcan War or Nazcan Invasion occurred around the time that Delinius was barely 12 years. Rather than trying to stay safe the best he could, he insisted on aiding in the effort against the Nazcan threat. His young age meant that he was unable to work with any of the weaponry that had been distributed to the rest of his family (notably, they equipped heavy crossbows that Delinius could hardly carry, let alone wield). Instead, he was offered a specially-crafted short bow and a hatchet, both of which he could actually use effectively.

Throughout the various conflicts with Nazcan forces, Delinius picked up a lot of new ways to utilise his magic for various purposes. Alongside the forms of magic he'd already learned the basics of, he also became quite skilled in cryptomancy After years of prolonged combat, Ludus was at last freed by a group of witches that would come to be associated with its name, and Delinius resumed his studies for some time until the death of his grandmother in -184 AEQ, age 95.

At some time after the end of the Nazcan War, Delinius was invited to a party where he and a number of peers celebrated the victory over the invading hivemind. An experimental spell proposed by one of them was poorly executed, killing him along with three more partygoers. However, Delinius reanimated, likely a saving act performed by Dwin. Presumably, a Nova was inserted into his body, an entity consisting of a deity's 'blood' substance. Aside from reanimating him in the form of a Soul Flame, this had the unusual effect of drawing in fragments of souls belonging to three others who had died in the accident, altering Delinius' personality to some extent.

-183 AEQ

Misunderstood because of his transformation, Delinius abandoned his homeplace and traveled to mainland Ludus. By misfortune, this was several months before the witch hunts would start, in -182 AEQ. Although initially not targeted by paranoid Ludusians, Delinius defended the witches and their actions in front of his neighbours, causing him to be deemed equally suspicious and subsequently hunted. In the following 44 years, Delinius travelled great distances to escape from paranoia, reaching as far as Mavus as well as the southeast coasts of the Faeric. Throughout this time, he encountered individuals sharing in his fate of all kinds, ranging from fellow magicians to the lone alien trying to escape suspicion. While not careless about their fate when angry Gridmasks would come for them, Delinius generally didn't linger around groups of runaways for long, knowing it would be a matter of time until his slowly rising fame would land them in more trouble.

It is known that Delinius did in fact follow the events surrounding Jericho Cane's campaign to end the oppression of magicians and aliens and wished to help. However, he could not rest in one place for any period of time, having acquired an amount of infamy that he was continuously pursued by some amount of committed Gridmasks. Frustrated by this, Delinius took the risk of crossing the ocean to the north of the main landmass, having heard about the continent Auzos. Despite poor weather conditions, he completed the journey to the continent. Safe from paranoia there, he was able to find work in express mail delivery, though much of the residents of Auzos remained hesitant to aid the Soul Flame, or other refugees.

Taking note of this, Delinius quit his job after a number of years, using his savings alongside a less time-consuming job in order to fund a new project of his, aiming to provide refugees with a chance to establish themselves on Auzos properly. Using a clever system that based itself off of salaries once the initiative got off the ground, the project became a popular venture for refugees of all kinds, whether magician, alien, or both. Of all of these, several happened to be Soul Flames, though they generally took little note of this. However, one in particular did take interest in this fact, by the name of Lyka Westwood. After several months of mostly friendly interaction, Delinius finally let her convince him to speak to her separately, only to discover that she'd developed romantic interest in him. Fairly hesitant at first, he agreed to give it a chance. Lyka turned out to be quite like-minded in a way that Delinius hadn't expected, and their bond grew. As well, she coined a name for the refugee initiative that had been running for quite some time now: Langton Incroporated.

For many years, Langton Inc. was a successful organisation that revolved around more than finding work alone. Education was often kept internal for convenience, and there was fairly strong social coherence despite the many differences. However, some of Auzos' residents did not appreciate what appeared to them as 'a state in a state', a term soon used to describe the place. Even so, hostilities were generally minimal, excepting several larger riots.

-93 AEQ

Due to a misunderstanding, Delinius unintentionally killed a man resembling Sanford, and was forced to abandon Auzos to return to the main continent, also leaving Lyka on her own. Due to his absence from the continent where he'd be hunted down for decades, much of Gredile's populace had little idea of who the man truly was at the time, though a multitude of myths circulated concerning him.

With the reappearance of Delinius, however, the majority of news agencies attempted to interview him, basing their conversations on the myths and asking the Soul Flame highly suggestive questions. Unwilling to be pinned to the incorrect tales of his past, Delinius actively denied them an interview and set out to have a small home built in the arid desert of Gredile. Though this resolved the issue about the irritating reporters trying to reach him, it did leave a number of imitators unaddressed. Hearing of many cases of arson in Steckenberg, Delinius began spreading rumours of his supposed plans to hunt every one of the responsible arsonists down, causing several to flee. For the others, he proceeded to make these rumours true, tracking them across all of Steckenberg until he saw opportunity to kill them. This did not affect his reputation, as it was believed that these murders had been by rather militant citizens that had suffered from the arsonist wave.

-72 AEQ

Once the majority of Steckenberg's arsonists had either fled or died, Delinius left his home for several months and travelled to his place of birth on Faeric. While not immediately noticed, a few distant relatives had heard news from Steckenberg and brought Delinius to everyone's attention. A great celebration was held, commemorating the loss of Delinius' family as well as his victory over the many setbacks throughout his life. As he wandered around, he rediscovered the places of his childhood. For the first few nights, he opted to spend the night camping under a tree strongly tied to an old game he used to play with his sister.

While talking about many things with the people around him, Delinius was informed of the exact reasoning behind the plague of monsters that drove Gridmasks to kill his family and many other magicians, leaving him to conclude that fortune had its part in keeping him alive against both Ludusian monsters and people supporting the Green Day movement.

When finally taking his leave, a number of residents promised to have various things sent over, from baked goods by a relative in Steckenberg to entire pieces of furniture. A few of his own distant kin even offered him an old artifact: an old cloak once donned by none other than the first Langton himself. What exactly it did or how it had gotten to their side of the family remained unclear, because it would give off an unpleasant aura whenever anyone attempted to wear it. This had left them to conclude that it sought someone of greater power or perhaps worthiness, and they deemed Delinius eligible for either quality.

After returning home, Delinius recieved the gifts spread across an entire month, discovering that some of the gifts included fair sums of money hidden within them, sometimes with notes rambling about restored family traditions and values. However, this did allow for expanding his home, to keep up with the steady supply of gifts. Through the contacts of Faeric's residents, a few requests for him to teach children at his home also made their way to him, the idea being to house them at his (now significantly larger) home in a 'boarding school'-esque manner. The majority of the students signed up for it were specifically sent in order to be taught in various forms of magic, though usually focused around Delinius' specialities. A select few even find reason to seek out Delinius to be introduced to Dwinian religion, a practice that is exclusively done in the attic of the mansion.

After weeks of searching, Delinius was found by his sister, who turned out to be quite alive. After nearly a century, they both attained an extended lifespan and quite the stories to tell. Quite soon, Ina came to live with him, acting as housekeeper and assisting him with minor tasks here and there. While they were both quite sad to realise that they were the only ones left of their family branch, there was an equal positive feeling that they'd made it this far through the many hardships.

Saga-Doomed Timeline

-52 AEQ

Halfway through Osmium, one of Delinius' students makes mention of a company that sells tamed Ludusian monsters and provides custom habitats for them. While initially sceptical of the possibility to tame monsters, he first adopted a fairly benign creature before offering service as a handler of legal issues, something which the company appeared to have trouble with on a regular basis.

Some of the managers of Isles & Quint were initially slightly wary of Delinius, having heard some of the myths surrounding him, but soon discovered that Delinius was incredibly insightful, capable of resolving more than just legal mishaps and other issues related to documents. Through hard work, Delinius eventually was assigned an entire floor to house legal files on, which became his domain.

-51 AEQ

Although a valued and capable legal issues manager, Delinius came to note the negative effects of a powerful enemy, Kuipter. While many of his colleagues/friends ventured out in order to deal with the origin of the threat, Delinius himself remained at work, both in order to keep some amount of order among the employees that were not too afraid to come and in order to protect the company from harm. As well, he assisted the Ludusian government in evacuation efforts for some time.

Around the beginning of the year, Delinius noted a peculiar anomaly whenever he was in the presence of Mori, who appeared to have a 'shadow' of sorts. Knowing the origins of the Moriam family to have connection to Zaion, he concludes that Amygea must have acquired an artifact of some sort, and he later deduces that it must be the Book of Shadows. However, Delinius makes no mention of this to anyone. Likewise, when scavenging the remains of Dr. Sand's airship once it had crashed, he encounters Amygea - immediately casting a photomantic spell to render himself invisible - and watched large parts of the wreckage being moved off to an unknown location.

-50 AEQ

Lazarus

All of Isles & Quint's staff are summoned for a company trip to Universe City. While initially reluctant over an undefined feeling that something negative would happen, Delinius eventually agreed to join, along with Ina.

Serendipity

On Serendipity 13th, Delinius was warned by a Dwinian prophet of a great disaster that would come in a little under eight years. From this point on, Delinius developed defenses for his mansion in collaboration with many of his distant relatives, reducing his work hours while still managing to get all his work done.

When the group known as the Grey Agents began acting in public, Amygea Moriam was suspected of being involved, and imprisoned. Though Delinius refused to believe this at first, not wanting to fall to common suspicion so easily, Amygea then broke out of the prison with help from the Grey Agents and their vessel, the Nemesis Veneer. Delinius did not partake in the brief chase and battle between his associates and the Grey Agents, instead tracking the course of the vessel from a safe distance. Because of this, he is able to distinguish a clearly northbound course before the ship disappears completely.

While suspecting that the Grey Agents had gone to hide on Auzos, Delinius decidedly kept the information to himself, instead finding a Dwinian priest who helped him cast a protective spell that would prevent both physical and magical forces from restraining Delinius. Donning the old pseudonym of Leonard Essington, he began an investigation on Auzos, making use of the connections he retained from the time of Langton Incorporated. Thanks to his disguise, he was visible to neither any Grey Agents nor Taku, who would have seen all of it otherwise. Eventually, he discovers a sole hint that Headmaster Bismarck of the Witch Academy may be an alternate identity. After some inquiries, a location slightly off the coast proved to be a likely location for the Grey Agents' hideout.

Delinius made himself known, and was immediately captured for interrogation. However, he disproved their belief that he'd come for the sake of drawing attention to their location and offered them an agreement, in which he would maintain their secrecy in return for the guarantee that their actions would not cause harm to the general populace. Although especially Caledonia doubted Delinius' ability to hold any authority over them, he reminded them of his own insightful nature, his many connections all across Ludus, and the nature of his ancestral deity. At the end, he briefly mentioned that he knew of the artifact in Amygea's possession, as well as his lack of change in attitude, before finally leaving for home.

Antagonist

Delinius is summoned for interrogation by Taku, based on the suspiciously similar circumstances around Delinius' period of being invisible. Aware of the suspicion Taku rightly has, Delinius explains why he was invisible. As well, while he does speak the truth about searching for the location of the Grey Agents, he lies about the result of his investigation, stating that their whereabouts are a mystery.

-42 AEQ

The chain of events known as the Reckoning occurs, leading to the death of many. Rather than finding shelter, however, Delinius armed the various systems he had been preparing over the past eight years, and ventured out in a powered combat suit of some sort, along with highly advanced firearms.

Meeting some of his fellow I&Q friends, they all expressed moderate shock at the fact that Delinius had the intent to remain outside the bunker they were standing next to, while feeling equally betrayed upon hearing the information Delinius did not share with them before. However, they all flee inside when a meteor strikes nearby, leaving Delinius to bring as many citizens to the nearest bunker before his attention is needed elsewhere.

The Beta timeline is under the development of Ludicrine and kept off-site to be worked on separately.

Details about Delinius' significance to the timeline have yet to be divulged.

Γ Gamma Timeline

Delinius of the Gamma timeline is little different from his Saga iteration up to -150 AEQ, when he fled to Auzos - years before doing so normally. On this timeline, Langton Incorporated becomes a much larger organisation, mostly due to the extra years it exists. However, he is forced to move it eventually as the population of Auzos becomes increasingly hostile towards it.

While moving the organisation to Gredile, Delinius distracts Steckenberg's people to allow the residents of Langton Inc. to settle without too many problems. During this, Delinius repeatedly comes into contact with both the Ludusian government, and several other protagonists, who believe that he is a criminal. Once the migration finishes, Delinius takes to hiding in disguise for several years, after being injured in a confrontation. Now that he has effectively disappeared, a student's research into his past reveals that his reputation of pyromaniac and arsonist is wrong. Soon enough, this news spreads to all of Gredile, allowing Delinius to resurface. While in hiding, however, Langton Incorporated has slowly fallen apart as its residents began settling elsewhere, now leaving a fairly empty shell. After the organisation has officially been disbanded, Delinius is given the remaining capital in its possession, which is enough for him to build a luxurious home with. After this, he sets out to start an industrial company.

Δ Delta Timeline

It is known that Delinius of the Delta timeline remained in his home area and was crowned Archlight, a title giving him the status as head of Dwinian religion. From this coronation on, he moved to Mavus to reign from there.

Relationships

Delinius has several notable relationships aside from his work associates.

  • Ina: They both care a lot about each other, making jokes along the way.
  • Maltus: Delinius' relationship with Maltus can be described as somewhat difficult on occasion, although the two have come to terms with their mutual past.
  • Lyka: On most timelines, Delinius and Lyka have a strong romantic bond, formed mostly during their time together on Auzos.
  • Isles & Quint/LDZX: Generally speaking, Delinius gets along well with his work associates, though there are slight differences in his interaction with some of them:
    • Zoshi - Delinius usually gets along well with him, often making jokes or remarks that are on the edge of acceptable, yet only does so for hunourous purpose.
    • Baxter - Curiously enough, the two only occasionally talk. If asked about this, Delinius tends to smile and remain silent.
    • Ludicrine - Apparently is somewhat scared of Delinius, but considers him a fairly reliable (albeit too passionate sometimes) worker and friend to some extent.
    • Hankvi - Delinius admires Hank for the enormous amount of work he does, as do many others. Compared to others, however, he only shows this appreciation in a subtle way.
    • Revelian - Although Revelian considers Delinius a work associate and an acquaintance, Delinius has different thoughts about this. What exactly these thoughts are remains unclear, though they are supposedly based on Delinius' historical knowledge.
    • Mercuron - Due to Mercuron's masked aura, Delinius considers them something of a mystery. However, this does not get in the way of occassional humourous talks, and Delinius is quite sympathetic to them.
    • Samuel - Due to Sam's generally cheerful mood, Delinius often finds Sam improves his own spirits, though this may later result in him writing contemplative texts and poetry, possibly due to the large difference to his own mindset.
    • Mori - Although their contact is mostly limited to work-related conversation, Delinius is aware of their relation to Zaion, as well as their abilities involving dark magic. Despite this, he seems to treat Amygea with as much respect and sympathy as anyone else.

Battle Information

Stat Trend

Delinius' stats lean towards magical ability, but he has a decent health pool and is somewhat agile. While his strength and defense are low, his dexterity is above average and he has a lot of magic potential. This allows Delinius to deal a lot of damage through magic, but renders him unable to last very long in prolonged battles. Some of his traits and moves do allow him to further increase his damage potential as his health lowers.

Damage varies depending on the type of attack used, with Fire and Thunder type attacks causing the highest amount of damage. Explosion damage has a 30% chance to stun.
      • Solar Hail - Causes a hail of tiny charged particles to rain down upon enemies. Could be considered Delinius' version of PSI Starstorm. Can deal different types of damage, though Fire, Thunder and Space are most common. Has a 30% chance of inflicting a status effect if the attack type is associated with one.
      • Pyroclastic Wave - Casts a pyroclastic cloud on enemies, blinding them and dealing Fire and Physical-type damage over time. As it also blinds allies, it is usually used when alone.

    • Phoenix icon The Phoenix - Delinius' first and most used axe. While not quite as heavy as a typical battleaxe, it does allow him to attack with reasonable accuracy. Deals average damage. The weapon oddly enough deals its physical damage only based on Delinius' strength and dexterity, while the elemental damage is entirely based off of his magical prowess. Can inflict Burn at a 50% chance, regardless of traits that prevent, increase or decrease this.
    • Flingshot - Delinius' bow. Deals Physical-type damage. Has a 10% higher chance to land a critical hit.
  • Sunny Day - An alternative to the Phoenix with a gradient pattern of yellow and light blue on it. Deals Light-type damage. Much lighter than the Phoenix, allowing Delinius to hit two times each turn, but deals only half the damage for each.
  • Thunderous Smasher - A short, bright yellow axe with what appears to be a carbon fiber handle. Deals Thunder-type damage. Has a 30% chance to stun with every attack.
  • Hades Harbinger - A special three-in-one weapon, combining a flamethrower, an axe and a triple crossbow. Created for Delinius by Hankvi and Masa as a gift. Draws on Delinius' MAG stat for the flamethrower. Cannot be stolen from him.

    • FITH Symbol Dwineage - Grants high magic power as well as high levels of pyromancy. Increases chance to inflict Burn by 25% and grants immunity to Fire-type attacks (as well as most Light-type ones).
    • Dwin sign Lightbringing Aura - Increases Evasion of allies by 5%, reduces enemy Accuracy by 5%. In addition, is capable of scanning enemy stats at the start of each turn.
    • Rage restraints - Resistant to becoming enraged. For every Ice, Freeze or Dark-type attack, In Rage will increase Delinius' defense stat by 10%, which may stack up to 30%. Alternatively, this can also reduce the defense decrease from Rageburst by the same amount.
    • Warmly Lit- Absorbs 50% of Fire- and Light-type damage, but takes 40% more damage from Ice and Freeze-type attacks.

The Maintenancekeeper is most notably different from many other counterparts in possessing little dexterity, instead combining a good health pool with above average strength and potent magic. While not fit for taking a beating normally, he can reduce the amount of times his enemies may attack and so take them out.

Trivia

  • Delinius is sometimes called by his second name, something that aggravates him very much.
  • His Pestertag is disillusionedLongevity, which seems to refer to his experiences during the witch hunts as well as his ageless state.
  • His aura has a distinct scent of hot sauce, and is so far the only orange aura among the protagonists.
  • Having been born before the first war with the Nazcans, Delinius supposedly has great historical knowledge, though he rarely shows to possess it. In addition, it is unclear how much he knows about the past of other protagonists, if at all.
  • He has an unusual hatred towards Sanford, presumably for Sanford's role in the witch hunts.
  • Apparently, Delinius forgets to speak Common when highly tired or drunk. During this, he will speak as many as four or five different languages, all of which cannot seem to be understood and are called 'Latin', despite that fact that no such language exists on Ludus.
  • Delinius' favourite foods are burritos and sandwiches, both usually with spicy sauce.
  • The last name Langton is an existing name in real life and quite common, though the character's author did not realise this until much later.
